Human Resources Education

E-mail: jrrpk661@bu.edu

The Human Resource Education Program is for students who intend to work in planning, implementing, and evaluating private-sector and government training programs. Students develop skills, knowledge, and experience in problem solving, organizational structure and dynamics, and strategies for interventions that produce change.

In addition to the program at the Charles River Campus, there is an Accelerated Master's Program (a full day of classes on Fridays and Saturdays on alternate weekends for two semesters) at the Corporate Education Center in Tyngsboro.

More information on the Tyngsboro program.

Doctor of Education

Doctoral candidates must hold a master's degree or its academic equivalent from an accredited institution. Students entering the doctoral program with advanced standing-where that option is available-(example: two master's degrees or a master's and a CAGS) will be required to complete a minimum of 32 credits. Specific requirements relative to the selection of courses, seminars, and research or independent study are determined by the student's department of concentration. Departments generally require a number of courses beyond the minimum.

  1. Each EdD candidate must complete a Schoolwide core requirement of two consecutive 4-credit courses (SED ED 700 and SED ED 701) beginning in September of the first academic year of matriculation.
  2. Every doctoral candidate must take at least three courses (12 credits), beyond those taken at the master's level, from a list of designated research offerings.
  3. Every doctoral candidate must spend a minimum of one year in residence at Boston University. Residence is defined as registration for a minimum of 12 credit hours at the University during each of two consecutive semesters. (Summer Terms I and II may be considered one semester, offering 4 credits in one session and 8 in the other).
  4. A formal application for a comprehensive examination must be filed with the department chairman and faculty advisor. The examination must be completed successfully.
  5. Each candidate must demonstrate the ability to make a significant contribution in his or her field and to report this contribution successfully in a doctoral dissertation.

Note: The residency requirement for teaching assistants is met by registration for a minimum of 8 credit hours for each of two consecutive semesters. For additional information, contact your academic advisor, refer to the School of Education Policies and Regulations Handbook, or contact Associate Dean Boyd Dewey.

Boston University -- independent, coeducational, and non-sectarian -- is an internationally recognized institution of higher education and research located along the banks of the Charles River and adjacent to the historic Back Bay district of Boston.

With more than 30,000 students from all 50 states and 135 countries, it is one of the largest independent universities in the United States. For over 150 years, Boston University has anticipated the changing needs of its students while serving the greater needs of society.

As one of the nation's premier research universities, Boston University believes that all students benefit by learning from dedicated teachers who are actively engaged in original research. The University's learning environment is further enriched by an extraordinary array of direct involvements with the broader artistic, economic, social, intellectual, and educational life of the community. These relationships provide a distinctly practical edge the University's educational and research programs, while enhancing the life and vitality of one of the world's great cities.

Boston University's policies provide for equal opportunity and affirmative action in employment and admission to all programs of the University.
