![]() | Standing atop Providence's historic College Hill, the Van Wickle Gates are the symbol of Brown. The gates are opened just twice a year — once inward during convocation, when members of the incoming class march into the Brown community, and once outward during graduation, when seniors leave Brown to enter the "real world." On the gates is an inscription from the words of Cicero, which reads: "These studies fortify one's youth, delight one's old age; amid success they are an ornament, in failure they are a refuge and a comfort." |

Campus Overlook | |
The Hornbostel architectural style of the original campus plan is evident in the newer buildings such as the University Center and the Purnell Center for the Arts, which line the Cut, as well as the traditional Baker, Porter and Doherty halls. The university's signature tower on Hamerschlag Hall rises over Pittsburgh's nearby Schenley Park, where students relax in nature's setting. Several blocks from campus lie the residential neighborhoods and shopping districts of Squirrel Hill and Shadyside. Students flock there to shops, restaurants, movie theatres and coffeehouses. A few blocks in the other direction students meet the hustle and bustle of Oakland's hospitals, educational institutions, restaurants, night clubs and stores around the University of Pittsburgh. Carnegie Mellon's campus, nestled among wooded hills, quaint neighborhoods and lively business districts, provides students with an environment that combines the best of both worlds—an urban campus in a green setting. | |
