内容提要: Course Description
This course is designed to provide an advanced anlysis of industrial relations and human resource management. Issues related to various sub-disciplines, such as labor economics and industrial/organizational psychology, will also be discussed. Major topics included are external environment of human resource management, human resource system, labor market, staffing, training, development, organization theory and organizational behavior, compensation and benefits, and labor relations.
Course Objectives
You will learn about five areas: 1) The environment of human resource management, 2) Acquisition and preparation of human resources, 3) Assessment and development of human resources, 4) Compensation of human resources, and 5) Special topics in human resources. When you successfully complete this course, you will have developed and/or enhanced your knowledge and skills in these areas. Specifically, you will be able to do the following in each area upon successful completion of the course:
1) The environment of human resource management · Describe the effects of the external environment on human resource management (e.g., market conditions, labor supply and demand, legal regulations and employment law, etc.). · Describe the effects of the internal environment on human resource management (e.g., organizational culture, business strategy, technology, and organization of work, etc.). · Describe strategic human resource management and explain its significance. 2) Acquisition and preparation of human resources. · Evaluate and critique employee recruiting, employee selection, and staffing strategies used by organizations. · Describe effective methods of training and development for employees. 3) Assessment and development of human resources · Evaluate the appropriateness and effectiveness of performance management and appraisal systems. · Describe various motivation models and identify the impact of motivation on how human resource management practices are implemented. 4) Compensation of human resources · Explain the components and structure of basic employee compensation and benefit plans. · Describe pay-for-performance systems. 5) Special topics in human resources · Describe the best HRM practices and systems · Describe the role of human resource practices in creating the healthy organizations · Describe the collective bargaining process in a unionized setting and common employee relations activities for a non-union setting. · Comparison of HRM models across countries You will also be able to organize, present, and justify a recommendation. You will have enhanced your skills at articulating your views (written and oral) in a logical, eloquent, and persuasive manner appropriate to the audience through the in-class activities, essay portions of the exams, and homework assignments.
