康 涅 狄 格 州 是 新 英 格 兰 六 州 中 最 偏 南 的 一 州。 康 涅 狄 格 州 之 名 黎， 来 自 印 地 安 语 Quinnethtukqut， 意 义 是“ 受海 潮 影 响 的 一 条 长 河 流 经 之 地”， 简 称“ 长 河 之 地”。

一 六 一 四 年， 荷 兰 航海 者， 首 先 驶 入 康 涅 狄 格 河。 一 六 三 五 年， 英 人 始 向 本 区 殖 民。 那 时 候， 印 地 安 人 在 本 州 之 内， 约 有 七 千。 其 中 最 强 的 一 族， 叫 做 白 卦 特 族Bequot。 一 六 三 七 年， 英 人 与 土 著 发 生 战 争。 一 七 八 八 年 一 月 九 日 成 为 美 国 旧 十 三 州 中 之 第 五 州。 以“ 山 桂” Mountain Laurel为 州 花。 本 州 别 名 为“ 宪 法 之 州”Constitution State。 本 州 箴 言：“ 移 居 本 地 者 仍 在 生 存”He Who Transplanted Still Sustains。

本 州 大 专 院 校 有 五 十 多 所。 其 中 最 著 名 的， 例 如 一 七 ○ 一 年 创 立 的 耶 鲁 大 学， 一 八 七 七 年 创 立 的 哈 特 福 大 学 及 一 八 八 一 年 建 立 的 康 涅 狄 格 大 学。 哈 大 在 西 哈 特 福。 康 大 在 斯 托 尔 斯 Storrs， 其 地 在 哈 特 福 之 东。 哈 特 福Hartford位 于 本 州 中 心， 又 介 于 纽 约 与 波 土 顿 两 大 港 口 之 间， 地 理 位 置 重 要。 现 为 本 州 州 府， 人 口 一 六 万。

本 州 有 三 个 特 征： 第 一， 一 六 三 九 年， 本 州 首 先 创 立 基 本 法 Fundamental Orders， 确 定 每 一 位 公 民 都 有 选 举 权。 这 部 基 本 法， 已 公 认 为 世 界 上 最 老 的 一 部 成 文 宪 法。 首 先 实 施 基 本 法 地 区 是 本 州 威 则 斯 非 德Wetheersfield。 第 二， 本 州 是 新 英 格 兰 六 州 中 工 业 最 盛 的 一 州。 主 要 是 制 造 核 子 潜 艇、 喷 射 飞 机 引 擎、 直 升 飞 机 引 擎、 球 承 轴、 塑 胶、 钟 表、 电 业、 电 气 器 材 及 打 字 机 等。 第 三， 本 州 州 府 哈 特 福Hartford， 是 美 国 的 保 险 业 都 市Insurance City。 市 内 有 四 十 家 美 国 大 保 险 公 司 总 部。

本 州 人 口 虽 然 只 有 三 百 多 万， 但 其 生 产 总 值， 可 达 七 十 多 亿 美 元。 工 人 总 数 约 占 本 州 就 业 人 口 五 分 之 二。 本 州 工 业 技 术 水 平 精 密， 工 人 具 有 高 度 精 巧 的 技 术， 例 如 制 造 喷 射 飞 机 引 擎 及 电 脑。 本 州 为 冰 碛 土 区， 土 壤 之 内， 含 有 大 量 沙 砾。 出 产 马 铃 薯、 玉 蜀 黍 及 蔬 菜。 牛 奶 业 及 肉 鸡 业 也 很 发 达。
